I can’t tell you how many times I get asked the same questions: What happens after we book a family photoshoot? What should we wear? What if the kids don’t cooperate? Where should we do our photos? Family photoshoots are a wonderful way to capture cherished moments and create lasting memories. However, the key to a successful session lies in the preparation. From choosing outfits to coordinating schedules, a little planning goes a long way in ensuring that your photoshoot runs smoothly and yields beautiful results. Here’s a guide on how to prepare for your family photoshoot to make it an enjoyable and stress-free experience.1. Plan AheadSchedule Wisely: Choose a time and date that works for everyone in the family. Consider nap times for young children so that they arrive well rested and happy. For studio sessions, usually morning and afternoon work best for lighting. For outdoor photoshoots, we usually shoot about an hour before sunset because the lighting is best that time.Choose the Right Location: Choose a location that complements the style and mood you envision for your photos whether it's a scenic park, a cozy home environment, or a beautiful beach. If you’re uncertain about where to go, we’re here to assist you in making the best choice. For younger or more energetic children, outdoor locations are often ideal as they provide plenty of space for them to move and play freely. Sometimes, the best photos come from moments when kids are running around and laughing, capturing their natural joy and spontaneity.2. Coordinate OutfitsPick a Color Palette: Choose a color scheme that enhances the season and setting of your photoshoot. For a fall session, warm, earthy tones like burnt orange, navy blue, burgundy, and mustard yellow blend beautifully with the autumn landscape. In contrast, spring is the perfect time for soft pastels that reflect the season’s fresh and vibrant feel. Aim for colors that harmonize with the environment and avoid overly bright or neon shades as they can distract from the overall mood and aesthetics of the photos. Additionally, try to steer clear of pure whites, as they can sometimes reflect too much light detracting from the overall look and feel.Coordinate, Don’t Match: Rather than dressing everyone in identical outfits, aim for coordination. Choose a few key colors and patterns and mix and match them among family members. This approach creates visual interest while maintaining a cohesive look. Pinterest is also a great way to find ideas.Consider Comfort: Ensure that everyone’s outfits are comfortable and appropriate for the weather. Opt for breathable fabrics and layers that can be added or removed as needed. If it is cold, bring a jacket that you can also put on and take off in between photos. Cold children will get pink noses and will not be happy in the photos. The same also goes for clients wearing heels. For outdoor sessions, feel free to bring a pair of flip flops you can quickly change in and out of for photos. Sometimes the ground is muddy or soft and we don't want your heels sinking in or getting ruined.3. Prepare the FamilyCommunicate: Discuss the photoshoot with your family to set expectations. Explain the purpose of the session and what everyone should expect. Make sure everyone understands the importance of cooperating during the shoot. The more they cooperate, the faster the session is over. Prepare the Kids: Bring along their favorite toys or snacks to keep them entertained and happy. If your child has a beloved toy or comfort item, it can be helpful for keeping them calm and engaged. Additionally, consider bringing a favorite family member or friend who can interact with your child off-camera to make them laugh and smile while you’re being photographed.4. Get Ready for the DayPack a Photoshoot Bag: Bring along essentials like a lint roller, a brush or comb, and any necessary touch-up makeup. If you’re shooting outdoors, consider packing sunscreen and insect repellent.Arrive Early: Aim to arrive at the location a bit early to get settled and to have time for any last-minute adjustments. This also gives you a chance to review the setting, get kids used to the space, and ensure everyone is ready before the shoot begins.5. Work with Your PhotographerShare Your Vision: Communicate with your photographer about your vision for the shoot. Share any specific poses, styles, or themes you have in mind. Providing examples or inspiration can help us understand your expectations. We want to exceed your expectations. We can't copy the images, but we can use them for inspo!Be open to Direction: Trust your photographer’s expertise and be open to their direction. They’ll guide you through poses and adjustments to ensure everyone looks their best.6. Have Fun and Embrace the Moment Remember that a relaxed and happy family will result in better photos. Enjoy the process and focus on having fun together. Genuine smiles and interactions will shine through in your images. And if things don’t go as planned—if the kids are fussy or the weather doesn’t cooperate—don’t stress! Your kids are only young once, and you can always try again next time. These moments, whether perfect or imperfect, will become cherished memories in their own right. By following these preparation tips, you’ll set yourself up for a successful family photoshoot that captures your family’s unique personality and the special moments you share. So gather your loved ones, get ready to smile, and enjoy the experience of creating lasting memories!
